11 Saul sent men to David’s house to watch it and to kill him in the morning. But Michal, David’s wife, warned him, “If you don’t run for your life tonight, tomorrow you’ll be killed.” 12 So Michal let David down through a window, and he fled and escaped. 13 Then Michal took an idol and laid it on the bed, covering it with a garment and putting some goats’ hair at the head. 14 When Saul sent the men to capture David, Michal said, “He is ill.” 15 Then Saul sent the men back to see David and told them, “Bring him up to me in his bed so that I may kill him.” 16 But when the men entered, there was the idol in the bed, and at the head was some goats’ hair. 17 Saul said to Michal, “Why did you deceive me like this and send my enemy away so that he escaped?” Michal told him, “He said to me, ‘Let me get away. Why should I kill you?’” 1 Samuel 19.11-17

Saul continued to plan to kill David. No longer would he try with the spear; this time, he sent men to David’s house while he was sleeping to kill him. Thankfully, his wife, Michal, saved him. Yet, she made it sound as if David had threatened her life if she did not let him escape.

Talk about drama! I’ve compared this saga to the television series Yellowstone before. We see the good and the bad, different generations with different motives, and everyone looking out for themselves—except for David, who, as Samuel said, was a man after God’s own heart.

Too often, we, like Saul, scheme against others. This happens in every aspect of life because people are sinful. Yet we, who are saved, sanctified, and holy, should be set apart. No longer do we have to struggle against the enemy who wants to kill, steal, and destroy. We can be guided by the hand of a loving, caring, and gentle God.

It was too late for Saul because he had shown his disobedience to the Lord. But it is not too late for us to turn to Him, call upon His name, and be saved.

“O Lord God, you are good. Thank you for allowing me to find rest within your arms. I trust you, Lord, and glorify your holy name. Come now, Holy Spirit, and find me willing and able to serve you. For you are good, and your love endures forever.” Amen.
