Gospel of Mark | Go! | Mark 16.15-18 | movementministriesblog.com

He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.” Mark 16.15-18

Okay, so the whole snake handling thing is a little strange. Jesus, what were you thinking? Is this to be taken literally, as some do? Or is it more of a figurative illustration about the spiritual authority and power believers will have in Jesus’ name?

Also, how about the driving out of demons? I have never seen a demon, although I have felt their presence. I have prayed to cast them out and by faith, believe this happened. And yet, it was not quite like a face-to-face confrontation like Jesus’.

And then there is this mention of poison? Do not drink it! I do not understand Jesus’ context but feel like today he would say a similar thing to us. However, there was a purpose in him teaching about this — perhaps emphasizing the authority we will have over all kinds of matters.

What I really take away from these verses is his command to go, preach, believe, and baptize, knowing that the consequences of doing or not doing this are significant. This is our commissioning, this is our mission.

And whereas the mention of some of these practices is out of my experience, we nonetheless have been given authority by the one who has the authority to give — to overcome all things: demons, poisons, snakes, hell. The ability to be his hands and feet, to be the light in the darkness is made possible by this authority. However, it is never just about me or my gifts — I am only an instrument in the hand of the Master.

So wherever God sends you today, take authority! Don’t be rash but do be bold! Be a light, be salt, and represent Christ to all by his grace and for his glory.

“Jesus, this is a weekend for me to rest, relax, and be renewed. I thank you for loving me and for allowing me to walk with you. I am so grateful for the cross, for this life of promise, and for the blessings of walking in step with your Word. Come now Holy Spirit, fall upon me. Fill me with your love and guide my steps. For you are good and your love endures forever.” Amen
