“Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience. 12 We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us, so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. 13 If we are “out of our mind,” as some say, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.” 2 Corinthians 5.11-15
Paul sure was occupied with making sure find and live for Jesus! This of course is what we want, and expect, but I imagine those in disagreement with Paul would say he was fanatical, radical and obsessed.
In Paul’s continuing address to this Corinthian church, he is trying to “persuade others” to “fear the Lord.” (fear really means to be “in reverent awe of…”) He wants all people to know Jesus. Why? Because “we are convinced that one died for all, and therefor all died.” In addition, Paul adds, “And he died or all, that those who live should not longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.”
The compelling love of God means souls will be saved, lives will be redeemed, persons will avoid the disasters of dying without Christ and find life eternally with God. Christ’s love persuades, moves, motivates and inspires us. His compelling love, that we are so richly enjoying, is meant for all people. This should be the reason why we as Christians share our faith.
Today is a great day (rather month, rather year) in the Freeman household. Not only did Lane and I celebrate twenty years, but Brian and Chase were married, Bailey turned 18 and got accepted to Baylor U! God’s blessings reign down on those who love and follow him. I share this so we in turn might share with others the great, compelling love of Christ. Salvation is found only in Jesus. And through Jesus we might have life and life abundantly!
“O Lord God, I am so happy, so blessed and so thankful that you have rescued us from the grave. Thank you for loving me and my family with an everlasting love. We rejoice in your goodness and celebrate your grace. Use us Lord to share with the world your love and redemptive story. For you are good and your love endures forever.” Amen
